Above: The Commonplace Pantheon. This piece is one of my best drawings thus far and is certainly one of my most challenging. The two young women in the drawings are my two closest friends. The biggest challenge came in drawing the faces to perfectly resemble their real-life counterparts. The Commonplace Pantheon is drawn from colored pencil and marker. and is officially a "mixed media" piece. The Pantheon made a perfect four at regional VASE and ascended to state VASE where it won a perfect score of 20/20 and got itself another four.
Below: Apotheosis. Like my previous work, the Pied Piper, this is another attempt at paper cutting. however, this piece is twice the length of the Pied Piper. Apotheosis scored a four at regional VASE but did not advance to state, repeating the history of the previous year. Apotheosis will be my last paper cutting piece for now. Featured on the left is Ciervo del sol, which is completely colored pencil. I affectionately call it "Sunny D" as a nickname. "Sunny D" was entered into the regional contest, known as VASE, and won a four-the highest rank that it could receive at the regional level. It was then voted to go to the state VASE level where it got another four.
The piece on the right was an experiment with paper cutting. It's titled Pied Piper and is my spin on the old tale. The technique I used allows each piece to be either suspended independently or stacked on another piece. That way, when a light hits it, a shadow is created that gives the illusion of floating. The Pied Piper got a four at the regional level as well but did not pass on to the state level. |
